What is an AA Meeting?
A meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous is a program where alcoholics and people who struggle with drug use gather for one hour to discuss their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Palo Alto, California will share their experience getting sober through their personal stories with anyone looking to get sober. There is no religious, social or economic association for membership, just the desire to get sober, and live a fulfilling life without alcohol.

Big Book Meeting – At Big Book meetings, a member will typically read out of the Big Book and follow the reading with a discussion amongst its members.
Speaker Meeting – At an Alcoholics Anonymous speaker meeting, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous will tell their story and share their experience, strength, and hope with fellow members of Alcoholics Anonymous. The speaker may or may not talk through the duration of the meeting and can often be followed by a discussion amongst the members.
Alcoholics Anonymous Literature Meeting – A literature meeting typically involves reading from one of the Alcoholics Anonymous approved pieces of literature and an sometimes they open the floor to discussion at the end or a speaker about the literature of topic.
Step Study – An Alcoholics Anonymous step study traditionally focuses on one or two steps per meeting. This can involve a speaker lead discussion about a particular step, literature reading, and may or may not be followed by a discussion about the step(s).
Meditation Meeting – A meditation meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous can involve internal contemplation for a portion of the meeting or even the entire meeting. The meditation may be guided and is sometimes followed by an open conversation.
Traditions Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting – One or more of the Alcoholics Anonymous traditions will be discussed in depth. This can be done with a speaker, literature lead, and may or may not be followed by a dialogue.
