What is an AA Meeting?
A meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous is a place where alcoholics and people who struggle with drug use gather for one hour to share their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Alpine, Texas will share their experience getting sober through their personal stories with anyone working on their recovery journey. There is no religion, creed or race, for membership, just the wish to get sober, and live a happy & healthy life without alcohol.
The Best Method of Choosing an AA Meeting in Alpine, Texas
It is important when coming to AA that you select a meeting that is suited for where you are at in sobriety. The 1st type of AA meeting is a new comers meeting and is not only for new comers but is a meeting that encourages members to share their stories and accept help. Another type of meeting would be a single gender meeting, which is only open to one gender. A Closed meeting simply means the group is solely focused on conversations regarding how to maintain sobriety from alcohol. Talking about any other illicit substances is not allowed. A Step Study is a gathering that is simply focused on a single step and spoken about in length regarding the best approach to working this step and applying it to your daily life. Traditions meetings revolve around the 12 traditions of AA. The 12 traditions are not the same as the 12 steps. The traditions were implemented to maintain order throughout AA and holding each group accountable to these traditions is why you can join a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous anywhere in across the globe to hear the same message.
How to get the most out of your initial meeting in Alpine, Texas
To get the most out of your initial meeting you need to walk through the front door with an open mind, and the willingness to change. Make sure to be ready to arrive early and stay late because there is always a “before” and “after” for every meeting, where the members of the group gather outside and talk. Make sure during opening announcements that you raise your hand to let the group know this is your first meeting. Make sure to request a meeting list, with contact information of the group members. The last thing to remember is don’t be afraid to raise your hand and speak, share the journey that lead you through their doors that day.
