What is an AA Meeting?
A meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous is a program where alcoholics and people who struggle with addiction gather for one hour to share their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic's Anonymous meeting in Washington, PA will share their experience getting sober through their personal stories with anyone working on their recovery journey. There is no religious, social or economic association for membership, just the want to stop drinking, and live a productive existence without alcohol.
The Best Method of Choosing an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Washington, PA
It is important when coming to Alcoholics Anonymous that you select a meeting that is best for where you are at in sobriety. The first type of AA meeting is a new comers meeting and is not only for new comers but is a meeting that motivates members to share their stories and reach out for help. Another type of meeting would be a single gender meeting, which is only open to one gender. A Closed meeting simply means the group is solely focused on conversations regarding how to maintain sobriety from alcohol. Talking about any other drugs is not allowed. A Step Study is a gathering that is simply focused on a single step and spoken about in length regarding the best approach to working this step and applying it to your daily life. Traditions meetings revolve around the 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 traditions are not the same as the 12 steps. The traditions were established to maintain order throughout Alcoholics Anonymous and holding each group accountable to these traditions is the reason you can attend an AA Meeting anywhere in the world to hear the same message.
How to Get The Most From an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Washington, PA
In order to get the most out of your first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting you should remain open minded. Everyone had preconceived notions of what these meeting were and generally it is the same misconception. The one piece of advice I was ever given was to sit down, stop talking, pay attention to the message, and humbly ask for help. At any meeting, the one constant will be message of recovering from a hopeless state of mind. The process of recovering from that hopeless state is in asking for help from another addict which you will find in any Alcoholics Anonymous meeting you choose to start with.
