What is an AA Meeting?
A meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous is a place where alcoholics and people who struggle with addiction gather for one hour to share their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Lebanon, Kentucky will share their experience getting sober through their personal anecdotes with anyone looking to get sober. There is no religion, creed or race, for membership, just the wish to stop drinking, and live a fulfilling life without alcohol.
Choosing An Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Lebanon, Kentucky
There are a variety different AA meetings in Lebanon, Kentucky. Before choosing the meeting that you are going to attend, it is helpful to know the different types of AA meetings and who can attend each one.
Open Meeting of AA – An Open Meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous is open to anyone who has a desire to attend. You do not have to have an alcohol addiction to go to an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. Friends, family, and children can attend these meetings.
Closed Meeting of AA – A Closed AA Meeting is only for those who have a desire to stop drinking. Friends and family are not able to attend these meetings.
Big Book Meeting – At these meetings, a member will commonly read out of the Big Book and then encourage its members to discuss the meeting.
Speaker Meeting – At an AA speaker meeting, a member of AA will tell their story and share their journey, strength, and hope with fellow members of AA. The speaker may or may not talk through the duration of the meeting and an sometimes they open the floor to discussion at the end.
AA Literature Meeting – A literature meeting commonly involves reading from one of the AA approved pieces of literature and can often be followed by a discussion amongst the members or a speaker about the literature of topic.
Step Study – An AA step study traditionally focuses on one or two steps per meeting. This can involve a speaker lead discussion about a particular step, literature reading, and could be followed by a discussion about the step(s).
Meditation Meeting – A meditation meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous can involve meditation for a portion of the meeting or even the length of the meeting. The meditation may be guided and then followed by a discussion.
Traditions AA Meeting – One or more of the AA traditions will be discussed in depth. This can be done with a speaker, literature lead, and could be followed by a conversation.
Being that each Lebanon AA meeting is autonomous, they are able to run each meeting as they see fit. Variation of meeting formats is common and you can also find AA meetings in Lebanon that do not. We recommend contacting the local AA intergroup to get more information on AA Meetings in Lebanon, Kentucky, or navigating to aa.org to locate more information.
How to Get The Most From an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Lebanon, Kentucky
The best way to benefit the most from your first AA meeting you should remain open minded. Everyone had preconceived notions of what these meeting were and generally it is the same misconception. The one piece of advice I was ever given was to sit down, stop talking, pay attention to the message, and humbly ask for help. At any meeting, that one thing that will always be present is the message of recovering from hopelessness. The process of recovering from that hopeless state is in asking for help from another alcoholic which you will find in any AA meeting you choose to pick as your first.
