What is an AA Meeting?
An Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting is a place where alcoholics and people who struggle with substance abuse gather for one hour to express their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Rockport, Illinois will share their experience getting sober through their personal anecdotes with anyone seeking help with a drinking problem. There is no religious, social or economic association for membership, just the aspiration to stop drinking, and live a happy & healthy life without alcohol.
How to Choose an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Rockport, Illinois
It is important when coming to Alcoholics Anonymous that you select a meeting that is suited for where you are at in sobriety. The 1st type of Alcoholics Anonymous meeting is a new comers meeting and is not limited to only new comers but is a meeting that inspires members to speak their truth and accept help. The second type of meeting would be a single gender meeting, which is only open to one gender. A Closed meeting simply means the group is solely focused on conversations regarding how to maintain sobriety from alcohol. Speaking of any other drugs is not allowed. A Step Study is a meeting that is simply a specific step and spoken about in length regarding the best approach to working this step and applying it to your daily life. Traditions meetings are based off the 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 traditions are not the same as the 12 steps. The traditions are built to maintain order throughout Alcoholics Anonymous and maintaining accountability to these traditions is the reason you can walk into an AA Meeting anywhere in across the globe to hear the same message.
How to benefit the most from your first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Rockport, Illinois
To benefit the most from your first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting you need to walk through the front door willing to accept change and be open minded. Make sure to arrive 30 minutes early and stay 30 minutes after because there is always a “before” and “after” for every meeting, where the members of the group gather outside and talk. Make sure during opening announcements that you raise your hand to let the group know this is your first meeting. Don’t forget to ask for a meeting list, with contact information of the group members. Last, but certainly not least don’t be afraid to raise your hand and speak, share the journey that lead you through their doors that day.
