What is an AA Meeting?
An AA Meeting is a place where alcoholics and people who struggle with substance abuse gather for one hour to express their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Paton, Iowa will share their experience getting sober through their personal anecdotes with anyone working on their recovery journey. There is no religion, creed or race, for membership, just the yearn to stop drinking, and live a fulfilling life without alcohol.
How to Choose an AA Meeting in Paton, Iowa
It is important when coming to AA that you pick a meeting that is suited for where you are at in sobriety. The first type of meeting is a new comers meeting and is not limited to only new comers but is a meeting that encourages members to share their stories and ask for help. Another type of meeting would be a single gender meeting, which is only open to one gender. A Closed meeting simply means the group is closed to any discussion that does not involve how to stay sober from alcohol. Speaking of any other illicit substances is not allowed. A Step Study is a gathering that is simply a specific step and spoken about in length regarding the best approach to working this step and applying it to your daily life. Traditions meetings are based off the 12 traditions of AA. The 12 traditions are different than the 12 steps. The traditions were created to maintain order throughout AA and holding each group accountable to these traditions is why you can join an AA Meeting anywhere in the world to hear the same message.
How to get the most out of your first meeting in Paton, Iowa
To get the most out of your first meeting you need to walk in with an open mind, and the willingness to change. Make sure to arrive 30 minutes early and stay 30 minutes after because there is always a “before” and “after” for every meeting, where the members of the group gather outside and talk. Make sure during opening announcements that you raise your hand to introduce yourself as a new member of AA. Don’t forget to ask for a meeting list, with contact information of the group members. Last, but certainly not least don’t be afraid to raise your hand and speak, share the journey that lead you through their doors that day.
