What is an AA Meeting?

An AA Meeting is an assembly where alcoholics and people who struggle with addiction gather for one hour to express their experience, strength, and hope. AA Members who attend an Alcoholic’s Anonymous meeting in Fairfield, Ohio will share their experience getting sober through their personal stories with anyone looking to get sober. There is no religious, social or economic association for membership, just the aspiration to get sober, and live a productive life without alcohol.

Selecting An Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Fairfield, Ohio

There are a variety different AA meetings in Fairfield, Ohio. Before choosing the meeting that you are going to join, it is helpful to know the different types of AA meetings and who can attend each one.

Open Meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous – An Open Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting is open to anyone who has a desire to attend. You do not have to be an alcoholic to go to an open AA Meeting. Friends, family, and children can join these meetings.

Closed Meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous – A Closed Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting is only for those who have a desire to stop drinking. Friends and family are not able to attend these meetings.

Big Book Meeting – At Big Book meetings, a member will typically read out of the Big Book and then encourage its members to discuss the meeting.

Speaker Meeting – At an Alcoholics Anonymous speaker meeting, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous will tell their story and share their experience, strength, and hope with fellow members of Alcoholics Anonymous. The speaker may or may not talk through the duration of the meeting and can often be followed by a discussion amongst the members.

Alcoholics Anonymous Literature Meeting – A literature meeting typically revolves around reading from one of the Alcoholics Anonymous approved pieces of literature and can often be followed by a discussion amongst the members or a speaker about the literature of topic.

Step Study – An Alcoholics Anonymous step study usually focuses on one or two steps per meeting. This can involve a speaker lead discussion about a particular step, literature reading, and may or may not be followed by a discussion about the step(s).

Meditation Meeting – A meditation meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous can involve internal contemplation for a portion of the meeting or even the whole time. The meditation may be guided and is sometimes followed by an open discussion.

Traditions Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting – One or more of the Alcoholics Anonymous traditions will be discussed in depth. This can be done with a speaker, literature lead, and may or may not be followed by a discussion.

Since each Fairfield Alcoholics Anonymous meeting is autonomous, they are able to run each meeting as they see fit. Some meeting formats may vary and you can also find Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Fairfield that do not. We recommend contacting the local Alcoholics Anonymous intergroup to find out more information on Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings in Fairfield, Ohio, or navigating to aa.org to find out more information.

How to Get The Most From an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Fairfield, Ohio

In order to get the most out of your first AA meeting you should keep an open minded. Everyone had preconceived notions of what these meeting were and generally it is the same misconception. The best advice I ever got was to sit down, stop talking, listen to the message, and humbly ask for help. No matter the type of meeting meeting, that one thing that won’t change is the message of recovering from a hopeless state of mind. The process of recovering from that hopeless state is in asking for help from another alcoholic which you will find in any meeting you choose to pick as your first.
